Interview by Sarah Willis in 1988 with Sister Barnabas who was Charge Sister of the children's ward at the Mater Hospital at Waratah. Sr. Barnabas is a Roman Catholic nun, a member of the order of the Sisters of Mercy. She has been nursing since 1952 at The Mater Misericordiae Hospital and in 1988 the Nursing Unit Manager of the children's ward, a position she has held for the past 17 years. Sister Barnabas was born 1934 and was brought up at Blanford, just outside of Murrurundi. She came to Newcastle in 1952 where she started her training as a nurse and entered the convent in 1953. Sister Barnabas reflects on her training to become a nurse, work conditions and some of the treatments that were used The Margaret Henry Oral History Archive is a collection of audio tapes, transcripts, summaries and essays that were part of the Oral Histories Open Foundation Course (1986-1989). Margaret Henry was a history lecturer at the UON in the 1980s. The oral history tapes have been digitised by Cultural Collections, UON Library and made freely available to the wider global research community thanks to the generosity of The Vera Deacon Regional History Fund. The wider collection of Margaret Henry Oral History Archive – over 220 in total and with many stories of Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and its surrounds and records voices describing the Regions cultural, intellectual and social life. It is an incredible legacy to Margaret Henry. The original audio tapes and written sources are held in Cultural Collections at the Auchmuty Library, University of Newcastle (Australia). Employment at Bank of NSW - Edward Swinton - 6 August 1988

Interview by Melissa Whithers in 1988 with Edward Swinton who worked at the Bank of New South Wales from 1933 to his retirement 40 years later. Edward joined the Bank of NSW in 1933 at Uralla, NSW at the age of 16. He recounts the "wages freeze" during the height of the Great Depression, and his life in the country during the 1930s. In 1939 the bank transferred Edward to Fiji for 3 years, he reflects on his time there and the many famous people he met. When WWII broke out he joined the army and was sent to New Guinea where he served for 4 years. In 1946 he rejoined the bank and served in various small towns before moving to Sydney, eventually becoming manager of a branch. In 1988 he was retired and living at East Maitland. The Margaret Henry Oral History Archive is a collection of audio tapes, transcripts, summaries and essays that were part of the Oral Histories Open Foundation Course (1986-1989).
